Scars
Everyone loves a beautiful seamless skin which works as a covering for our muscles and internal organs. But like a small tear in a dress can ruin its beauty, scars on your skin can also make a major difference. They can seriously affect the social life of a person and lower the confidence in one’s personality. No matter what the injury was, it’s after effects can be devastating. Although scars are a part of the healing process, the remains of the scab need not always be a part of your skin. An injury, burn or even a surgery can leave a big scar on your body. But thanks to the recent developments in medical technology, now we have quite a few ways to remove the scar and give your normal smooth skin.
Different people have different skin types and that is what’s kept in mind while treating scars at Dr. Kalra’s Skin Clinic. Our doctors design a tailor-made treatment program as per the skin type of the individual and the type of scar, which may be-
- Keloid- They occur because of a highly-aggressive healing process. A serious keloid scar can also hamper the movement of the affected body part. Using pressure therapy or silicone gel pads at the time of healing process can prevent the formation of such scars but once they occur they must be treated with other means like injections/infusion, laser or surgery. Small keloids can also be removed using cryotherapy.
- Hypertrophic- Not as serious as keloids, these are raised red scars but do not go beyond the area of the injury. Silicone sheets may be used as a method to flatten these scars or steroid injections may also be used by your doctor.
- Contracture- Mainly caused due to burns, these scars tighten the skin of the injured area. Severe contracture scars can hamper the movement of the affected body part and can also harm the involved muscles and nerves.
- Atrophic scars- after injury skin sometimes heal with a dent in skin if suturing is not done, giving rise to atrophic scar.
- Acne Scars- These are the scars left over by acne on the face and their treatment is comparatively easier.
Over the counter ointments and oral medications are also helpful in removing scars. However, you must consult your doctor before doing so. But generally medicines cannot treat old scars which in turn require some form of procedural treatment. The procedures helpful in scar treatments are
1. SUBCISION- It’s a minor surgical procedure where a hypodermic needle is used to elevate a depressed scar.
2. PLATELET RICH PLASMA- Growth factors are extracted from patient’s own blood and are injected in the scar resulting in collagen remodeling which leads to clearing of scar.
3. MICRONEEDLING- Dermaroller/ Dermapen is used. Mainly helpful in acne scars.
4. MNRF- Along with microneedling this device relases radiofrequency energy which gives better results.
5. FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER RESURFACING- One of the best and proven treatment for all types of scars.
6. SCAR REVISION SURGERY- Very helpful for small linear scars.
