Eczema

Eczema, known as dermatitis in medical terms, is a common skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough skin. It may also include tiny blisters on the skin which, when popped or oozed, make the skin crusted and thickened. Although it may be hard to tell for sure that whether your skin inflammation is eczema or symptoms of some other skin problem. Hence, it is really important for you to contact a professional dermatologist who would examine your skin thoroughly and the tell whether it is eczema which needs to be treated or something else.
There are various types of eczema like-

  • Atopic dermatitis- This is a type of skin inflammation that results in itchy, red skin. Clear fluid may also come out of cracked skin or small blisters which thickens over time.
  • Xerotic eczema- Also known as winter itch, this type of eczema occurs due to dryness in the skin. The most common areas where this type of eczema occurs are the underarms and lower legs.
  • Contact dermatitis- As the name suggests, this is caused due to encountering any external object like a bracelet, watch, hair colour or any other accessory. Exposure to irritants and allergens causes this.
  • Seborrheic eczema- This is commonly seen in the scalp, mid-face, eyebrows, mid-chest or back. It can also be seen in infants’ diaper line and may cause scaly dandruff like patches on the skin.
  • Endogenous eczema- Eczema on hands and feet is termed as Endogenous Eczema and it is mainly caused due to prolonged hypersensitivity to certain irritants in the environment.

Eczema may either be genetic which means that it is spread through genes into newer generations or it may be caused due to certain environmental factors like exposure to allergens, etc. Therefore, eczema needs proper diagnosis before any type of treatment can be started. Hydrocortisone, antihistamines and corticosteroids are some common medicines used to treat eczema. However, none of these medicines should be taken without prescription of a professional dermatologist.
